“I met Eileen several years ago over lunch at her home with George Ciscle, and from that first encounter, it was clear she carried a profound sense of duty to her father’s legacy. As his only child, she became the sole steward of his work after his passing in 1969 – a responsibility she has embraced with unwavering purpose and intention. Eileen has accomplished not simply preservation but a quiet, lifelong act of devotion. Through her thoughtful, deliberate efforts, she has introduced the public to a body of work that encapsulates her father’s talent while recognizing his journey as a Holocaust survivor and immigrant. In honoring him, Eileen ensures his story – and his art – endures.”
“MedStar Health is extremely honored to have been chosen as a recipient of Peter Scholleck’s art work. The responsibility of supporting and preserving the legacy of this collection is something we do not take lightly and the ability to share this with our patients as well as our associates is significant. Art heals and it educates, and the ability to incorporate that into our hospitals is tremendous.”
“Peter Scholleck deviated from the standard means for creating contemporary art in the mid-twentieth century. He was a self-taught modernist who produced well over 200 works during his brief lifetime. He was not part of an artistic community, though he was intellectually curious and spoke five languages. His images demonstrate knowledge of most of the “isms” from Fauvism to Cubism and Surrealism and both German and American Abstract Expressionism. In some of his last paintings he was even prescient, anticipating Neo-Expressionism. In many ways, the power of his mature work derives from his outsider status making his images both compelling and extraordinary.”
“We saw Peter Scholleck’s work for the first time in October 2023 in his daughter Eileen’s home. His vision and paintings were stunning, sophisticated and strong and had many stories to tell about Peter’s creativity, technique and metaphor. His artwork was a hidden treasure and deserved to be seen by the public. Arting Gallery was honored and thrilled to hold the first ever exhibition of Scholleck’s work even though the 12 paintings that were shown were not for sale, a very unusual commitment for a gallery in 2024. Artists and art professionals who came to the gallery and attended the four salons strongly shared that the exhibition was a great celebration and unfolding of Scholleck’s art heritage which must be treasured and carried on.”
“Peter Scholleck’s paintings are deeply musical. His painting, Clowns (1963), a hauntingly emotional master piece, reminds me of the Requiem – Lacrimosa & Amen in D minor, K.626, a Requiem Mass by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.”
